  • Michael Chwe, Economist and Professor of Political Science (UCLA)

  • Alexis Dudden, Professor, Modern Japan, Modern Korea, and International History (University of Connecticut)

  • Richard Painter, Former chief White House ethics lawyer (2005-07) and S. Walter Richey Professor of Corporate Law (University of Minnesota)

  • Peipei Qiu, Louise Boyd Dale and Alfred Lichtenstein Chair Professor of Japanese and Chinese (Vassar College)

  • “Comfort woman” survivor and human rights activist Lee Yong-soo

The discussion will focus on academic responses to Harvard Mitsubishi Professor of Japanese Law J. Mark Ramseyer's proposed paper entitled "Contracting for Sex in the Pacific War" in the International Review of Law and Economics.

As specialists in their respective fields of history, cultural studies, law, and economics, each panelist will discuss issues of academic integrity and freedom raised by the paper and survivors' experiences in the "comfort women" system.  The euphemism refers to Japan's imperial policy and practice of sexual violence and trafficking as part of military strategy prior to and during the Second World War (1932-45).

The discussion will conclude with remarks by Korean "comfort woman" survivor Ms. Lee Yong-soo.  Last month, Ms. Lee publicly urged the governments of South Korea and Japan to refer issues regarding "comfort women" to the International Court of Justice as a victim-centered resolution and a way to move forward from the diplomatic stalemate over this fraught history.

This webinar is open to the public.  A recording will be posted on YouTube after the event.

The event is planned for an hour but may run to an hour and half.
