'카탈리나 흥사단 단소 사적지 지정'을 위해 많은 관심과 우려가 있는줄 압니다.
급한 사항들은 카톡방을 통해 알려드렸습니다만 지금까지의 과정과 단우 동지 여러분께서 참여해야 할 사항들을 정리하여 보내드립니다.
지난 5월에 LA 흥사단은 단소건축및관리위원회 부위원장이기도 한 이기욱군의 주도로 카탈리나 단소 개발업체와 접촉하여 미팅 일정을 잡았읍니다만
흥사단미주위원부, 대한인국민회기념재단, 미주도산안창호기념사업회, LA한인회가 '흥사단단소구입추진위원회'를 발촉하여
6월 9일 기자회견을 갖게 되었고 LA 흥사단과 단소위원회는 힘을 한 곳으로 모으고 추진위 돕는 것으로 결정하게 되었습니다.
카탈리나 단소 철거를 막는 유일한 방법은 사적지로 인정 받는 것입니다.
6월 18일, 추진위는 카탈리나 흥사단 단소 사적지 지정을 신청하였고 카탈리나 단소는 4차례 공청회를 마칠때 까지 철거는 막게 되었습니다.
신청서를 준비한 추진위와 차만재 단우님, LA City Planning Department에서 역사적 건물 보존을 담당하는 한인 2세 Christina Park님과
Christina Park님이 Boardmember 소속되어 있는 Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation 일원들과
무보수로 봉사하는 김혜자 변호사님께 이 자리를 빌어 감사드립니다.
6월 23일, LA 흥사단은 6월 월례회에서 서경원 위원장님과 Christina Park님을 모시고 '카탈리나 흥사단 단소 사적지 지정'을 위하여
단의 역할과 공청회 준비 과정에 대한 많은 의견들을 나눴습니다.
1차 공청회는 Zoom으로 진행하므로 지난 7월 1일에 있었던 다른 건물의 사적지 지정 요청에 대한 공청회에 참가하여 Zoom 진행 방식을 경험하였습니다.
'카탈리나 흥사단 단소 사적지 지정' 공청회는 총 4차례 에정되어 있습니다.
1차 공청회(7월 15일, 오전 10시): 주최 - Cultural Heritage Commission
2차 공청회(8월 중순): 주최 - Cultural Heritage Commission
3차 공청회: 주최 - Planning Land Use Management
4차 공청회: 주최 - LA City Council

We are an organization of historians, cultural preservationists, educational institutions, librarians, nonprofit organizations, students and individual community members. We are writing this Letter of Support for the local landmark nomination of a Korean American site with unparalleled significance to our community in Los Angeles.
The Young Korean Academy (variations: Heungsadan, Hung Sa Dan) was founded in 1913 in San Francisco by Dosan Ahn Chang Ho and is one of the earliest organizations for ethnic Koreans in the United States. Hung Sa Dahn was a moral and character-building organization and a longstanding civic, social and cultural hub in the Korean American community.
3421 South Catalina Street was the Los Angeles Hung Sa Dahn headquarters in the heart of Old Koreatown, where the earliest Korean Angeleno families settled near the University of Southern California. Hung Sa Dahn owned the property from 1936 to 1978.
Deeply associated with the Korean Independence Movement, the Catalina property was a longstanding civic, social and cultural hub in the early Korean American community in Los Angeles. With its erasure, our history will continue to be forgotten.
We urge you to approve the nomination of the Hung Sa Dahn Building as a Historic-Cultural Monument, as it has already been identified as a known historic resource by the Los Angeles Citywide Historic Context Statement/ Korean Americans in Los Angeles 1905-1980 by the City of Los Angeles, Department of City Planning, Office of Historic Resources in 2018.
Please approve this nomination in order to save this important Korean American landmark. This is an important opportunity to preserve an accurate account of our community’s presence, history and significance in Los Angeles.
